My Notes

Highlights & Notes

you really want everyone to be chief engineer. So if everyone is chief engineer means that people need to understand the system at a high level to know when they are making a bad optimization.

I couldn’t agree more, which is why, in the long run, I would bet anything that flat organizations produce more with less than any other organization structure.

“Feedback is a gift…” or so they say. But are your gifts useful, or are they more like the third pair of socks you get at Christmas? Delivering…

Highlights & Notes

The lesson I learned is that the best time to give feedback is as soon as you notice it. It's often easier to do, and it gives your team the best chance of success.

Wow, you can’t be an introvert in a team; ultimately, not speaking up will hurt the shareholders in the long run.

At PostHog, our approach is to have feedback dinners with the entire team. It gives everyone a chance to share feedback with each other in front of the rest of the team.

I like this a lot. It is the same as with the other highlight. Small team dinners will be good and encourage the people who wouldn’t speak up to speak up otherwise.

Learn about the limitations and restrictions of using Vercel Functions for both Node.js and Edge runtimes.

Highlights & Notes

Auto-scales up to 30,000 (Hobby and Pro) or 100,000+ (Enterprise) concurrency

Even the lowest tier of Vercel has 30x more lambda concurrency than the AWS starter account of 1,000.

Highlights & Notes

Every time a big company screws up, there are two highly informed sets of people who are guaranteed to be lurking, but rarely post, in a thread like this:
1) those directly involved with the incident, or employees of the same company. They have too much to lose by circumventing the PR machine.

2) people at similar companies who operate similar systems with similar scale and risks. Those people know how hard this is and aren’t likely to publicly flog someone doing their same job based on uninformed speculation. They know their own systems are Byzantine and don’t look like what random onlookers think it would look like.

So that leaves the rest, who offer insights based on how stuff works at a small scale, or better yet, pronouncements rooted in “first principles.”

From now on, I will declare my responses rooted in first principles instead of as an expert opinion because what OP said was true; I will rarely comment on things I am an expert on or things that directly involve a company I know.

You made what could be called an appeal to purity as a way to dismiss relevant criticisms or flaws of your argument.

Highlights & Notes

Example: Angus declares that Scotsmen do not put sugar on their porridge, to which Lachlan points out that he is a Scotsman and puts sugar on his porridge. Furious, like a true Scot, Angus yells that no true Scotsman sugars his porridge.

I wonder if the person who invented gaslighting knew about “no true Scotsman.”

The Infinite Monkeys Theorem has long-established the eventual certainty of the complete works of William Shakespeare being reproduced by a monkey ran…

Highlights & Notes

Given the expected time until the heat death of the universe, we demonstrate that the widely-accepted conclusion from the Infinite Monkeys Theorem is, in fact, misleading in our finite universe.

From now on, when talking about infinity, we’ve got to start including the heat death of the universe as the end.

Highlights & Notes

Eye contact anxiety can be influenced by several psychological factors. One potential cause is a heightened sense of self-consciousness and low self-esteem.
eye contact is a normal part of communication, and most people don’t judge me for it.
This might start with brief eye contact in a safe environment, gradually increasing in duration and complexity

The Great Divide is real, and I’m pleased that the terms “front-of-the-front-end” and “back-of-the-front-end” have gained traction ever since I quipped about the…

Highlights & Notes

But now that “JavaScript dun got big” , much of that code that would have historically been written in another language is now written in JavaScript, blurring lines between both front-of-the-front-end and back-of-the-front-end developers but also back-of-the-front-end and traditional back-end developers.

And here I was creating Full-Stack Developer positions because I thought you were supposed to be Full-Stack if you were working on backend endpoints, too. This is a great article that explains a modern-day front-end team.

Language model development seems to have hit a ceiling. OpenAI’s upcoming Orion model barely outperforms GPT-4, its predecessor, according to a new report.

Highlights & Notes

He said that the path to artificial general intelligence (AGI) is clear, and that what is needed is a creative use of existing models. Altman could be referring to the combination of LLMs with reasoning approaches such as o1 and agentic AI.

I guess this means that the next product we build that uses reasoning on these models won’t be quickly made obsolete by a version update.

Learn how intuition can improve decision-making, why experience matters, and when to trust gut feelings over analytical decisions.

Highlights & Notes

Simply put, you can only connect the dots in new and unexpected ways if you have many dots to connect. This is why broad experience is essential for developing reliable intuition.

Apparently, it pays off to be a jack of all trades

At the unconscious competence level, where skills and knowledge are so deeply internalized that they’ve become second nature, intuition is remarkably reliable.
